Ready Player Me Launches Avatar API – The Interoperability Layer for the Metaverse

It makes no sense for users to create a new avatar for each game and experience. Your avatar should be able to travel with you across the metaverse.

As they announce on their blog Ready Player Me has launched their avatar interoperability layer that improves avatar performance and integration flexibility.

An avatar system for the metaverse needs to translate avatars and their cosmetics seamlessly between styles allowing identities and wearables of users to carry over from one app to another while the aesthetics of the avatars change.

These are tricky problems to solve as they’re intertwined with an extensive, dynamic, ever-expanding cross-application content library.

With the API in place, those problems are easier to tackle, helping them to build a more native, in-engine avatar creator that lets avatars be more deeply integrated into the environment of games, provide multiple styles of avatars, improve the diversity through body shapes, including animations, and more.

Ready Player Me raised a $13M Series A funding round,  led by Taavet+Sten, the co-founders of Wise and Teleport, with participation from Tom Preston-Werner, the co-founder of GitHub, Samsung Next, NordicNinja and Konvoy Ventures, among many others.

They also state the core purpose and proposition of the venture:

“The metaverse is not a single app or a game – it’s a network of thousands of virtual worlds people visit to play, work, and collaborate. It makes no sense for users to create a new avatar for each game and experience. Your avatar should be able to travel with you across the metaverse.”

Their ambition is to build the best avatar system for developers across the metaverse, building out custom content creation tools, flexible avatar APIs and SDKs for improved developer experience and ease of integration, investing in avatar art through additional styles and body types, and improving avatar performance.

Their goal is also for Ready Player Me to become a revenue generator for developers, achieved through in-game asset sales and NFTs.
