Second Life – Lessons for the Metaverse
Philip Rosedale, the Founder of Second Life, has been pioneering the concept of the Metaverse for almost 20 years.
While the hype around Meta’s plans for building the Metaverse might suggest it’s a radical new concept, the true ground-breaking pioneers have been hard at work building it for 20 years.
Most notably there is Second Life.
Founded by Philip Rosedale it launched in 2003. As Wikipedia describes “Second Life is an on-line multimedia platform that allows people to create an avatar for themselves and have a second life in an online virtual world, or metaverse.”
Luca the Guide offers this mini documentary on how the vision of Rosedale was realized.
To hear from the man himself there is a wealth of Youtube materials to enjoy as he has been a renowned keynote speaker over this time. You can check out this Ted Talk where Philip describes how anything is possible through virtual worlds in 2008, this talk with the Singularity University in 2011, and recently speaking with the Futurati podcast on Second Life, virtual worlds, and economic systems.
Speaking with CNBC Philip provides his views on the recent layoffs by Meta and how this reflects on the state of Metaverse innovations today.
